Campaign Unavailable We're sorry, this alert is no longer available. If you would like to learn more about ways you can take action, please visit CREDO Action. The short explanation of this alert was: Following General Petaeus' distortion of facts in front of Congress, President Bush is preparing to ask for a supplemental $50 billion to fund the failed occupation of Iraq, on top of $147 billion in another supplemental bill to fund Iraq and Afghanistan together. It's simply unacceptable. American troops are still stuck in the middle of a bloody civil war. President Bush, however, ignored reality and the will of the American people by sending more troops into the quagmire for his ill-fated "surge." Many of those troops will be headed home in upcoming months -- not because of any security gains, but because our armed forces have been stretched to the breaking point. The GAO recently reported that the Iraqis had met only 3 out of 18 goals set for political and security progress. Tragically, there's still no exit strategy, no timelines for progress by the Iraqis, no readiness standards for our troops being sent in, and no realistic chance of success -- or even a definition of what success might look like! We've heard that we just need "another six months" for things to get better -- but if that sounds familiar, it's because we've been hearing that since 2003. Unfortunately, Congress seems to have completely lost their collective spine, and will soon be voting on yet another blank-check funding bill to continue the occupation. Send them a message that funding the occupation without enforceable timelines for getting our troops out is simply unacceptable. If you would like to view details on this alert, please visit here. |
